Teaching Rifle

Over the time between Christmas and New Years, I had the opportunity to teach several young men both firearms safety and how to shoot a rifle.  It is something that I really enjoy doing even as challenging as it can be.  Each of my students come from a different walk in life.  Some come from a rural setting and some come from a suburban setting.  I even see a few that come from the local big cities.  It is interesting to see their misconceptions and the misinformation that some of them come to camp with.  We always start with the required safety briefing and then go into sighting the rifle and how to determine your dominant eye.  After that we let the young men go hang their targets and we get down to business.  The boys have three days to meet the requirements that have been determined many years ago.  Having only three days and realistically an hour each of those three days makes it really tough to get all of them qualified.  I opened the range a few extra times so that they had more opportunities to get it done.  At the end of the short week we were able to get them qualified.  We did have to switch several of the young men over to the scope from the peep sights to get it done but that is what we have the scopes for.  It is also not surprising that once qualified by way of the scope they are also doing better on the peep sights.  Overall it was a great week and the boys learned something.
